STUDIES OF HONG KONG FISHES-No. 2.
By Henry W. Fowler,
Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, U.S.A.
The fishes forming the basis of this paper were collected in Hong Kong in 1929 and 1930. They were in two lots and were sent to me for study by Dr. G. A. C. Herklots. They include 563 specimens represented by 87 species. A number are of special scientific interest and of these descriptions and notes are given, especially with reference to variation. Four new species are described and figured, of which one appears to be also a new genus. Figures are also given of a number of young specimens. I am greatly indebted to Dr. Herklots not only for this interesting collection, but also for the extensive list of Chinese vernacular names, colour sketches and notes which he has gathered. These are all to be credited to him and his field notes are indicated by quotations.
This article is given as No. 2 as my first contribution to Hong Kong ichthyology was reported in 1929 (Proc. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia, 1929, pp. 597-616). That report was based on a collection made by me personally in the Hong Kong fish markets, and contained 184 species, though no
novelties.
